What is the Flemingdon Park Ministry?

The Flemingdon Park Ministry is a store-front ministry established in 1978 by the Anglican Church of the Ascension in Toronto. It is situated in Flemingdon Park Mall across from the Ontario Science Centre. The mall is surrounded by government-subsidized housing and the neighbourhood consists of a very multi-faith, multi-cultural, and transient population of 25,000 people speaking 90 different languages. Many people who pass through the ministry's doors are marginalized: women who have been abandoned or abused, children living in the midst of insecurity and stress, and people who are experiencing a loss of any kind of meaningful direction in life. They have housing problems, legal problems, and financial problems. Possibly their greatest problem is finding someoone they can trust who will listen and share their pain. A friend of the ministry writes, "The ministry to me is a place to get counselling, encouragement, help, sit and have a cop of tea, converse with anyone, and a place to meet people." Flemingdon Park Ministry provides a ministry of presence--a spiritual caregiver working on people's own terms. Director Betty Jordan describes the ministry as a "presence at the foot of their cross", helping empower people to get some direction and control in their lives and to see where God fits into their spiritual journey.

How does St. George's help the ministry?

Members of St. George's help the Flemingdon Park Ministry through donations to the FaithWorks program, which gathers donations and distributes them to charitable causes throughout the city. Also, volunteers from St. George's help out at an annual Christmas celebration at the ministry, and distribute gifts donated by members to chidren from low-income families in the community.
